Among the many cancers that are common in our country is bowel or colon cancer.Bowel cancer is a general term for cancer that starts in the large bowel and depending on where it began it is also known as colon or rectal cancer. What are the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer?

Almost 9 out of 10 people with bowel cancer are over the age of 60, and these symptoms become more recurrent as people get older. A combination of symptoms they bear are:

  • A change in bowel habit that causes them to go to the toilet more often and pass looser stools, usually together with blood on or in their stools
  • A transformation in bowel habit without blood in their stools, but with severe stomach pain
  • Blood in the stools without other hemorrhoid symptoms, such as soreness, discomfort, pain, itching, or a lump
  • Severe stomach ache, discomfort, and bloating are always provoked by eating

However, these symptoms cannot denote cancer by any means. So, if you are repeatedly experiencing these signs, do get a detailed check-up done, and if there are hemorrhoids found in the bloody stools, it may be a sign of cancer.

Bowel cancer can be treated using a combination of different treatments depending on where the cancer is and how far it has spread

The main treatments are:

  • Surgery helps remove the cancerous section of the bowel
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Biological treatments that increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy and prevent cancer from further spreading
